Today, I am a Race Horse Owner!

by Natalie on Sep.28, 2009, under Horse Racing

By_the_Book_08I’ve always loved horses, especially Thoroughbreds. But, since they’re not rideable and cost a fortune to maintain, I always had my realistic goal set on a Quarter Horse or a Paint Horse. That never came to pass, either.

Lack of funds is my biggest issue with owning a horse of any kind, even a miniature that you can actually keep in your house (yeah, don’t think that thought never passed through my mind). I’d looked into many different ways of owning a horse but it just never happened.

Betta Breeding Day 1

by Natalie on Jul.28, 2009, under Betta Breeding, Bettas

Day 1 always begins with the basics, right? I’m going to attempt breeding my Bettas in August. I have chosen Dot (my white female CT) and Lex (my black/blue with zebra stripes and leopard spots male HM). I am going for color as opposed to tail type, so putting a white female with a black male who each carry the metallic gene should be awesome. Maybe round two I will give Apache and Dot a go.

I went to Petsmart and picked up a 10 gallon tank ($13.99) and a 2 way breeder ($3.99). I used a plain styrofoam cup for the egg nest that Lex will build.

The End of an Era

by Natalie on Jul.22, 2009, under Friends, Work

It was a long run, the second longest in my life. I was with E-Mail Solutions since April of 2008 and tomorrow it is in the books.

I started at EMS as a joke, really. I had been working at Carlson Hospitality since August 2007 and was just messing around on CareerLink for some Tech Support jobs. I was growing pretty tired of the hotel industry. I came across a TS position at EMS and applied for it, along with about 12 others just to see what would happen. I had the interview at EMS with Nancy (can’t remember her last name) and was hired on the spot, something completely unheard of this day in age. It turned out that Nancy was leaving the company in just over two weeks so this had to hurry through. I was excited because it was TS and a dollar an hour more than I was making at Carlson. Plus, the position entailed mandatory overtime on Saturdays for 8 hours guaranteeing me a substantial paycheck (for what I was making).

The Power of 8

by Natalie on May.21, 2009, under People

You see a couple stranded in the dark of the night, what do you do?

You’re hesitant of course, reluctant to help them because you never know when you’ll encounter the next Zodiac, etc. It’s just not safe to assist strangers this day in age. Sometimes it’s not even safe to assist people that you think you know well.

Picture this.

BIG Omaha May 7-8, 2009

by Natalie on May.01, 2009, under BIG Omaha

I am so excited to be attending the First Annual BIG Omaha Conference May 7-8.  Particularly to see Adriana Gascoigne the founder of Girls in Tech. Also getting to see Gary Vaynerchuck, who I found out about while watching The Streamys, so I know a little more about him than I do the rest of the speakers. Jason Fried of Basecamp is also going to be one of the speakers. I don’t know much of Basecamp or 37signals but the whole Basecamp thing looks pretty neat. I’m going to have to look a bit more into this later on.

Cute Little Piglet

SARS didn’t bother me, certainly the Bird Flu didn’t bother me, but I can’t put my finger on why Swine Flu bothers me.
